What do acne, scarring, wrinkles and stretch marks have in common?

Although these skin issues occur for different reasons, collagen is the common thread. Collagen is the ingredient that plumps up the skin and makes it more youthful. The amount of collagen in the skin can be lost through the ageing process and damage from the sun.

What is the difference between a Dermapen® and traditional needle rollering?

The sloped, or curved, insertion of needles in dermal rollering, can create damaging trenches in the epidermis leading to more bleeding, pain and longer recovery time. It is also difficult to use around facial contours and delicate features. Dermapen’s automated vertical stamping method uses a sterilised and disposable tip which is safer and more effective. The small tip helps treat hard to reach areas and it reduces epidermal damage to limit down-time.

What is Dermapen® Collagen Induction Therapy?

Collagen Induction is a safe procedure that works by using a Dermapen® instead of the traditional dermal roller. The fractional, automated stamp-like micro-needling motion of the Dermapen® minimises pain and discomfort, while increasing the effectiveness of treatments. It does this by promoting an even absorption of special skincare ingredients into the skin that enhance results. Thousands of microscopic channels are produced in the dermis of the skin that stimulate the skin to regenerate and repair itself naturally and safely. Collagen and Elastin are formed, new cells are generated and the blood supply in the dermis is enhanced. This can significantly improve the appearance of aged and sun-damaged skin, facial and décolletage (chest) lines and wrinkles, stretch marks and acne scars.

History of Collagen Induction therapy.

The concept of using surgical needles in minimally invasive skin rejuvenation and repair procedures started to develop during the mid 1990s. The idea that you could use tiny needles like this resulted from experiments performed at Georgia Tech University in the late 1990s. The original experiments were designed to see if micro needles could help increase the permeability of the epidermis to medications applied to the skin. In the process, researchers discovered that if micro needles were inserted into the skin at a particular depth, skin stem cells (collagen precursor cells) were stimulated. This stimulation in turn caused the creation of thicker, more translucent skin by increasing collagen.

What results can be expected with Collagen Induction therapy?

Depending on the area treated, you will notice an improvement in your skins appearance. Acne scars will be less obvious. Age spots and fine lines are greatly diminished. Your skin will feel softer, be more translucent and your wrinkles and age lines will "fill in" and be less noticeable, and that makes you look younger!

How many treatments are required?

Age and skin conditions will determine the number of treatments required to achieve the maximum effect. Common skin conditions may require anywhere between 3-6 treatments with a 1-3 month interval between visits depending on your treatment plan.

Is collagen induction therapy painful?

You will feel many fine needles on your skin area where the nurse is working. For most people, it is far more comfortable with the Dermapen® than it is with a traditional roller. Because we are a medical clinic, the treatment can be made even more comfortable with the use of a skin anesthetic and other supportive measures.

Is there any recovery time?

Immediately after your treatment you will look as though you have moderate sunburn and your skin may feel warm and tight. This usually subsides within 24 hours. The recovery period is usually briefer with a Dermapen® than with a traditional roller

What are the advantages of Collagen Induction therapy?

  • Protects the epidermis and stimulates natural collagen synthesis
  • Less invasive than chemical peels, laser resurfacing or plastic surgery
  • Effective on all body areas.
  • Treats all skin types and colour
  • Can be easily combined with other therapies for enhanced results
  • Minimal recovery time compared with other treatments
  • More cost effective that treatments like fractionated lasers

What to expect before collagen induction therapy?

You will first have a consultation with the nurse to assess and discuss your problems, expectations, options and to discuss a comprehensive treatment plan to suit your needs. You will commence the two week pre-treatment preparation regime for your skin so that your treatment results are enhanced.

What to expect during Collagen Induction therapy.

You skin is cleansed and skin anesthetic is applied. Active ingredients are infused into your skin with the help of the Dermapen®.

What to expect after Collagen Induction therapy?

Post treatment infusion of vitamins to the skin and skin care applied. Post treatment skin care is continued throughout course of treatment.

Can I combine this with other treatments?

This treatment can be used in conjunction with any other advanced treatments like:

  • Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)
  • Microdermabrasion
  • LED light treatment
  • Laser treatments like IPL and Laser Genesis can also be included as part of your program.

Your nurse will recommend the best combination and treatment plan to meet your needs, suited to your skin and your lifestyle.

How can I make Collagen Induction therapy most effective?

The only proven way to further boost collagen production is to prepare the skin with Vitamin A & C prior to the treatment and then maintain an enhanced state of collagen and elastin production by continuing the regime. Enhancing internal health by not smoking and correcting any imbalances will also help – we can blood test for some deficiencies.

Who should NOT have Collagen Induction therapy?

  • If you are taking Roaccutane or have within the last three months
  • If you have open wounds, cuts or abrasions
  • If you have had radiation treatment in the area within the last year
  • If you have a current outbreak of Herpes Simplex, a skin infection or chronic skin condition in the treatment area
  • If you are a diabetic or any area of the skin to be treated is numb, lacks sensation or has poor wound healing
